Jump into Spring!
All the sniffles and snuffles of winter are coming to an end as we get ready to welcome spring! Though it may seem like the winter is dragging on, don’t let it drag you along. March is women’s history month and also full of important dates like international women’s day, the spring equinox, and numerous religious holidays. Start to get excited for April showers and May flowers by spending extra time with your family. It is easy to get caught up in winter’s shadow, but the sunshine is on its way and calling you out to play. Remember, you deserve to take a deep breath and enjoy the spring air. Treat yourself to some quality personal time and get ready for the season to bloom!

Kick-start Potty Training
With springtime come new beginnings, possibly including your child’s first time using the potty. We know just how difficult it can be to potty train your little one, so we’ve included a few questions and answers to help you along. It may take some time, but just as the bulbs outside slowly turn into flowers, your baby can move out of diapers into using the potty herself!
When should my child start potty training?
Most children are ready to potty train between age two and three. Some signs to look for include: discomfort in dirty diapers, pulling their pants up and down, and understanding or being able to say “need to go.”
How do I get my child to use the potty?
Introduce your child to the potty seat by explaining what it’s used for and how it works. Encourage them to sit on it whenever they want and emphasize that it’s just for them.
What will make potty training easier for my child?
Once they’re sitting on the potty, read or talk to them to help them relax. Don’t pressure your child to sit for more than a few minutes at a time. Be sure to praise their efforts, even when they’re not successful.
How do I get my child to use the big potty?
Once your child has mastered using their potty, use a trainer seat (one comes with most Safety 1st® potties) to help make the adult toilet less intimidating and more comfortable. After several weeks of success using the trainer seat, encourage them to use the “big potty” without it.
Additional pointers for parents
To make learning more fun for your child, use games and special rewards as encouragement. Watch and listen for the signs indicating that your child is ready for the next step. You’ll have good days and bad days, but with lots of love and support potty training can be a positive experience for both parent and child.

Red Cross Month
The American Red Cross® is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement. It provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Every year the President of the United States proclaims March to be "Red Cross Month" giving the American Red Cross an opportunity to promote its services and celebrate its successes in serving communities across the U.S.
In order to reach out to our Safety 1st® community during Red Cross Month, we have compiled the following tips to help keep your home safer.

Top 10 Home Safety Tips
- Ovens and stoves are hot and can burn your child. It is a good idea to use the back burners of your stove whenever possible and remember to turn pot and pan handles in, and away from the edge of the stove.
- Drowning can occur in less than 2” of water. NEVER leave a child unattended in a bathtub, not even for a moment; nor should a child be left in the bathtub in the care of an older sibling. Also, keep all toilets locked.
- Regularly survey the area for potential choking hazards, such as buttons, coins, plant leaves and dirt, etc.
- The hard sharp edges of furniture such as coffee tables and end tables can pose a hazard to crawling babies, and even walking toddlers. Be sure to pad corners and edges to avoid injury.
- Blind cords can pose a strangulation hazard to children. Do not position the crib near a window. Wrap up excess blind cords to keep them out of reach.
- Window screens cannot support the weight of a child, and are not intended to do so. Keep windows locked and keep children away from open windows.
- It is recommended that only children over two years of age be transitioned into an adult or toddler bed. For added security, utilize a portable bed rail.
- A child only needs to fall from a few stairs to be seriously injured, so be sure to use a gate at the bottom of the stairs as well. It’s OK to teach your child how to climb the stairs but she should only do so when you’re right behind her, every step of the way. Use a hardware-mounted or pressure-fit gate at the bottom of stairs.
- Home offices are particularly challenging to childproof because there are so many hidden dangers, including cords, filing cabinets, paper clips, staplers, etc. It is best to keep your child away from the home office area entirely by locking the door. Keep all choking hazards such as pen caps, push pins, etc. in a locked drawer.
- Be sure to install a smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside each sleeping area. Change the batteries when you change your clocks for daylight savings time (this month) and test them once a month. If your home uses gas for cooking or heat, be sure to also install a carbon monoxide detector. CO is especially dangerous because it is colorless and odorless, making it a silent killer.

Spotlight on Alyani!
This month, we chatted with Safety 1st Marketing Coordinator, Djamila Oliveira, about the newest addition to her family, Alyani, a 5 month old baby girl. This is Djamila’s first baby and it’s been quite an adventure so far! Alyani loves to eat milk, rice, cereal, and bananas, but especially likes to chew on any toy she can get her hands on! This summer the family is planning a trip to Cape Verde to visit her grandparents (we’re sure the weather there is much nicer than here!) Alyani is already sitting up on her own, trying to turn over, and even standing up! Unfortunately she isn’t sleeping through the night completely so Djamila has been getting used to feedings at 2 a.m. Alyani loves to take baths and is very accustomed to her routine of taking a bath, then eating a snack, and taking a nap (sounds like a good life to me!) For Easter she will dress up in a cute, frilly Easter dress and will be surrounded by her close relatives. Overall she’s a very happy little girl and that makes mom and dad very happy! We wish Djamila and her husband, Pery, good luck with their little one!
