Planning Vacations for the Entire Family

Ask almost any parent and they will tell you that planning a vacation can be an arduous task, especially if the ages of the children vary. Trying to make sure that everyone from the 2-12 year olds will have a fun and memorable experience can challenge even the best travel agent. But with some careful research and planning you can arrange a vacation that everyone will enjoy, even you!

Enlist help from your kids: Ask them what they want to do on vacation. While their request may not be feasible, such as “ride elephants in Africa,” it will give you clues as to what interests them (ex. A trip to the zoo). Take into account your children’s hobbies and interests. If your son is a history buff, Boston or Washington, DC might be a good bet. If your daughter loves horses, perhaps this is the year for a trip to a ranch. Research your location to see if there is something to interest everyone in the family.

Make it toddler friendly: Nothing spoils a vacation more than an overtired, over stimulated toddler. Keep your little one on his regular nap schedule as much as possible. Bring your child’s favorite snacks just in case nothing on the menu interests your little epicurean. Thoroughly research your destination to make sure it is kid-friendly. Disney is one destination that tries to accommodate small children. For example, the Disney parks have baby stations that offer a quiet, cool place to take a break and feed your baby while older children play or watch TV in an adjacent room. Many other destinations are starting to provide these types of facilities to make traveling with families easier so be on the lookout.

Avoid the “Are we there yet?” nightmare: If you’re planning a road trip this summer, build in time for numerous stops. An 8-hour drive can easily turn into twelve when lunch breaks, potty breaks, and leg stretching are factored in. Sometimes it’s easier to make the trip in 2 days than start your vacation stressed by the time you exit the car. Share some laughs and enjoy this family time together! Catch up on what your children are doing at school, ask questions about their friends, tell them the story of how you and your spouse met, daydream together, and most importantly, relish these moments forever, children grow up fast!
