Safety 1st focused on using three different eco-conscious materials in our Nature Next™ line: bamboo, bio-plastic, and recycled plastic. These materials each have different benefits that help us reduce our impact on the environment. Bamboo has been a popular material for thousands of years, but has recently surged in popularity due to both its beauty and environmentally-friendly attributes. While many people think of it as a wood because of its durable nature, bamboo is actually a grass. Because of this, a grove of bamboo that gets cut down will grow back in a few years, making it a great alternative to hardwoods that must be re-seeded after cutting and take many more years to grow to maturity. Bio-Plastics use a special formula for plastic production that replaces some of the fossil fuels used in regular plastic products with renewable plant starches. Using less fossil fuel is a good way to help shrink the carbon footprint caused by a product. Recycled plastic is similar to bio-plastic in that using it helps to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. Reusing existing plastic also helps eliminate material from the waste stream. It is with this in mind that the Safety 1st team in our Columbus, Indiana facility moved to zero-landfill status. This means that the factory is able to reuse over 99% of its plastic manufacturing waste. Looking towards the future, the Safety 1st Nature Next team will be investigating other environmentally friendly materials for both our products and our packaging that can be used in the Nature Next™ line and across all of our brands. We hope to see this line grow from the seedling it is today into a vibrant part of our company. Now, as readers of the Safety 1st and Foremost™ newsletter, you get to take a special sneak peak at the new Nature Next™ website. We encourage you to take this opportunity to explore the site and let us know your thoughts!Eco-Conscious New Products!

We’re even happier to report that Laura delivered a healthy baby girl! We recently caught up with Laura to find out about her life as a new mom. Brooke Calder was born two days before her due date weighing 6 pounds 2 ounces. We asked Laura if she was caught by surprised when the birth came slightly ahead of schedule. “It definitely was a surprise. Everyone had convinced me that I would be late since she was my first baby. She was born within two hours of being in the hospital!” Brooke’s full name is Brooklynn Grace Moir Calder. We asked Laura to give us some background on the name. “I loved the names Brooklynn (Brooke) and Grace. Moir is my maternal Grandmother's maiden name….having a lot of my family still living in Scotland; I wanted her to have some of that heritage in her name.” We asked Laura to tell us something that surprised her about having Brooke in her life. “I definitely underestimated how much I would change, and how the first two weeks of being at home would go. I was surprised by how quickly I slowed down to her pace…the littlest of things became big accomplishments for us. Taking a bath, reading a book, going for a walk or attempting tummy time, if we did any one of those things in a day, I considered it a pretty accomplished day.” Of course, we had to ask Laura for her favorite baby product now that Brooke had arrived. “My favorite product is the Safety 1st onBoard™ infant car seat. Being such a peanut when she was born, the seat fit her perfectly and now that she's growing bigger, she still looks just as comfy in it. She routinely falls asleep in it, often before we're even in the car! It’s not cumbersome to carry around, which is great since we're out doing something at least twice a day.” We thank Laura for taking the time to talk with us, and wish both her and Brooke a happy spring!
