You can prompt your child by asking questions about things he is thankful for. You might need to explain what it means to be thankful for something. This can be explained any way you’d like, but if you’re at a loss of ideas, you can explain it as being happy about something you love. You may be surprised by how much appreciation your little one might have for things he’s just never acknowledged. Thanksgiving is also a great time to put a modern spin on your own Thanksgiving story. Share family tales or have guests and relatives explain how they all got to be together for the holiday. Donovan surprised everyone by arriving ahead of schedule. “My husband Jeremy’s family is from Ohio and had a scheduled trip to visit their new grandson at Thanksgiving. However, since Donovan was a little impatient and came four weeks early, Grandma couldn’t wait that long and came to see him in October as well!” While Donovan is the first child for Jennifer and Jeremy, their golden retriever Jessi did experience some pangs of sibling rivalry in the very beginning. “She was sad and felt a little left out for the first two days, but she has adjusted really well. She stays by our side and follows us from room to room. She loves to lie down wherever Donovan is and comes to find me anytime that he starts to cry!” Jennifer also keeps an eye on Donovan using the Safety 1st High-Def Digital Color Video Monitor. With bare tree branches and the air getting colder, it may seem as though winter is trying to sneak up on you, but November is a great time of year – full of hand print turkeys for the refrigerator and preparations for Thanksgiving meals. It’s also a fun time to layer up and hit the farm stand for the season’s last crops. This month you can be thankful for having a family and a little one close to you. As the air becomes crisper, snuggle up on the couch or warm up in the kitchen with some new recipes.
Though each state and region has its own seasonal foods, some foods are commonly harvested all across the United States. In November, you’re likely to find: cauliflower, apples, turnips, onions, garlic, cabbage, sweet potatoes, and beets – just to name a few! Go online to research what’s in season where you live, and while you’re at it, look for farmers’ markets or pick-your-own farms. Once you pick up a piece of the season’s harvest, you can try several delicious recipes for you and your kids to enjoy. Make brown sugar pears from your fresh pears and tuck them inside of warm butter-sugar crepes, or try a cauliflower puree to compliment meats. (It can also be snuck into kids’ meals for a vitamin boost!)
There’s never an easier time to teach your children to be thankful than during Thanksgiving. Themed cartoons, class lessons and Thanksgiving turkeys all pave the path to being thankful. You may want to begin by modeling what you’re thankful for; put extra emphasis on things you’d like your child to understand. Chances are if mom, dad, or other relatives seem to be thankful about something it will influence your child to imitate those thanks.
This month we spoke with Safety 1st Human Resources Manager, Jennifer Rohrs, about the new addition to her family. Donovan Beckett Rohrs is the first child for Jennifer and his name has special significance. “Donovan was my grandmother’s maiden name which is why we chose it. My great uncle is thrilled that we chose the name! We also thought having a nickname of ‘Van’ would be cute.”
