National Child Safety Month
This month, take extra care to learn something new about your baby’s safety. Read up on the latest safety regulations or browse information from child safety organizations. Childproof your home with latches, locks, and gates available from Safety 1st. Take a second look when choosing what baby products you will bring into your home. You may even finally get around to rearranging the furniture you’ve been meaning to move for months. Childproofing Your Home
WHY? Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for children from birth to 14 years. Regardless of how closely you watch your little one, danger may still be lurking in the sharp edge of a coffee table or in a window screen. By taking precautions to childproof your home, you make a safer environment for your family. HOW? There isn’t just one right way to childproof your home. Every house is different and every room poses unique dangers. However, some things like smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be in every household, at least one per floor. Window and toilet locks prevent children from getting their fingers stuck in tight spaces. Cabinet locks keep children out of pots, pans, and cleaning solutions, while knob covers keep them from stovetops and burners. There are even straps to keep freestanding objects like televisions, bookshelves, and dressers from falling over. Edge covers are key to softening sharp table edges and gates are a must at both the top and bottom of stairs. Though security devices are certainly helpful, there are still ways to arrange your home to avoid slip-ups. Make sure your baby’s crib is free of excess pillows and blankets that can block airways and that the sides are high enough to keep your child from climbing out. Moving dangerous furniture or lamps that tip over easily is a great way to improve safety. As your baby grows, keep in mind new hazards like chairs and couches that allow access to windows. Overall, childproofing is an active process that involves making your home safer for your little one and offers you the peace of mind knowing your child is safer at home. Little did she know, that exactly one year later, she would find herself writing for Safety 1st. Peg and her husband, Joe, report that Timothy is the joy of their lives. “He adds so much life to our home,” she said. “The giggles, the babbling, the exploring—we love it all.” Lately, Timothy has discovered books and he’ll spend hours turning the pages and talking to the characters. “I love books, so it pleases me that he enjoys them, too,” Peg said. After books, his favorite toys are cars and trucks; he runs them all over the house making little car sounds. Timothy is also hitting the Terrible Twos. “He’s finding his own voice and has no problem letting us know his likes and dislikes,” Peg said. “I’m afraid that temper tantrums are the next step.” When Peg and Joe are at work, Timothy spends time with his Nana and Grandpa. “He adores his Grandpa,” Peg said. “In fact, ‘grandpa’ was one of his first words! But I’m happy to say that he recently started to say ‘nana,’ too.” Peg’s favorite part of the day is when she picks Timothy up after work. “He takes one look at me, yells ‘mama’ and runs into my arms,” Peg said. “That alone makes up for all the hard work that comes with being a parent. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” TopIf you have any questions regarding Safety 1st products please contact Dorel Juvenile Group Consumer Relations at consumer@djgusa.com. Top |
