May is for Mom
Perhaps it is no coincidence that Mother’s Day is celebrated just when the flowers start to bloom. In Greek mythology, Demeter was the goddess of the harvest as well as the caring, determined mother of Persephone. As the story goes, Persephone was kidnapped into the underworld for six months before being returned to her mother. During Persephone’s absence, the earth became cold and covered in snow. Once her daughter returned, Demeter rejoiced by warming the weather and inspiring the flowers to bloom once again for the spring and summer months. Maybe your green thumb doesn’t make the flowers bloom, but it certainly does a great job caring for your child. Taking a daily break to remind yourself of the love, care, and effort you put into being a mom can be helpful in remembering that you really do have that green thumb of nurturance. You are the sun that keeps your child growing beautifully—be proud! Being a mother is worth more than a day of celebration: Celebrate motherhood every day! Macaroni and Cheese: Warm, gooey, and a timeless family favorite. Skip the mix and make your own. Elbow pasta or shells are small enough for little mouths and tend to be easier to handle. Select your own fresh cheese and milk to provide a serving of dairy. Even part-skim string cheese tastes good and you can get your kids involved by letting them string it over the warm macaroni. Home Made Pizza: Fresh pizza dough is available at most supermarkets; most cook quickly and can be made on a large cookie sheet in the oven. You can smash up fresh tomatoes or use them from a can to make a sauce using your family’s favorite spices. Choose any fresh cheese and your favorite toppings. Have the whole family help out, or divide the dough into individual pizzas. Kid Tip: Vegetables might go unnoticed if they are in a fun shape like a smiley face! Sloppy Joes: Once again, skip the can. Use any ground lean beef, chicken or turkey from the supermarket. Any sauce will work to make it sloppy: tomatoes, onions, ketchup, and chili sauce could do the trick. Serve the mixed meat and sauce on fresh bread, rolls or your family’s favorite slices. Any of the above recipes can be made even healthier by adding fresh vegetables and using whole wheat. Pasta, pizza dough and bread all come in whole wheat varieties that are healthier than white bread and taste good. Vegetables can be chopped up into small pieces and hidden in any of the above dishes for a serving of vitamins and minerals. Skip the mix, choose your own ingredients, and eat well! Top5 Family Friendly Destinations
Being the third most populous city in the Pacific Northwest, Portland, Oregon, is full of exciting family opportunities. Pioneer Courthouse Square, The Rose Garden, and The Japanese Garden are just a few places to stroll through, relax on a bench, or play near the beautiful fountains. You can visit the Oregon Zoo to see the animals or watch a performance at either of the two Children’s Theaters. There’s even a Portland Children’s Museum offering hands-on activities all the time. Across the country, the Jersey Shore in New Jersey can be great for those who want to be entertained. With plenty of beaches and boardwalks to choose from, the Jersey Shore is equipped for family fun. Take a ride at an amusement park or visit the Cape May County Park and Zoo. The sharks and penguins at Jenkinson’s Aquarium await visitors after their behind-the-scenes tour or the Mommy and Me workshop. The next stop is Chicago, Illinois—another city booming with child-friendly places to visit. Right near the Navy Pier, the Chicago Children’s Museum calls itself the place “where play and learning connect.” You can visit the John. G Shedd Aquarium, the Children’s Theater, or the Lincoln Park Zoo. New to the mix is the Adler Planetarium for exploring outer space! As the weather starts to warm up, you can enjoy live music, dance, theater, and storytelling outdoors in the beautiful architecture of Millennium Park. In slight contrast with the modernity of Chicago, Boston, Massachusetts, is the heart of historic New England. You can visit numerous historic sites or take a Duck Tour of the city. The Boston Children’s Museum, the Boston Children’s Theater, New England Aquarium and the Museum of Science all offer great indoor fun for the whole family. Walk around Boston Common or take a trip to the Faneuil Hall Marketplace for shops and restaurants. There are also sporting events galore during every season, but be sure to reserve tickets before your trip to the area! Last but certainly not least, Family Friendly Cruises are a great way to travel out of the country and keep the family busy. Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Norwegian, Princess, and Royal Caribbean are just a few cruise lines that offer child care services that will keep your children active throughout the day. You can enjoy poolside sun by day and check out the nighttime entertainment that is planned daily. On a cruise, even getting to your destination is part of the fun! No matter where you choose to go, there are likely to be kid-friendly options in the area. If you hop online and research your destination before you go, you can’t go wrong. Do you live near any bustling cities or points of attraction? A day-trip could be just as fun as a week-long vacation. TopOur Websites are now in Spanish

Though it is often a challenge to find activities that will interest all three children, one thing they are sure to agree on is any sort of pasta dinner. Though pizza is a second runner up, even simple pasta with oil and garlic will win them over. When they’re not reading, Daniel enjoys playing his electronic games and biking; Juliana can be found playing soccer or softball; and weather permitting, Andrew enjoys digging outside. We’re told that he even sets up full construction sites around his digging. This past year, the family made a big move from one town to another. Dan says the most rewarding part of being a dad is watching his kids grow and succeed while trying new things or practicing hard to learn new skills. He is extremely proud of Daniel, Juliana, and Andrew for getting used to a new place and adjusting so well. According to a study of online Hispanic opinion-makers published in PRWeek, influential Hispanic-American adults spend an average of 6.0 hours per week reading online news, and 4.1 hours a week reading blogs and discussion boards. 69% of these people forward links to interesting websites and 63% forward news stories. Currently 24% of births in the U.S. are to Hispanics, and that number is projected to increase to 33% by 2010, according to American Baby magazine. This month, we chatted with Safety 1st Engineering Director, Dan Desimone, about his three kids, Daniel, Juliana, and Andrew. Though Daniel, age 14, and Juliana, age 9, have both graduated from their Safety 1st products, at age 4 Andrew is still enjoying his Maxi-Cosi® Rodi® Booster Car Seat. When asked if the age difference of his kids poses any difficulties, Dan answered that the siblings really do get along well, and all share a strong interest in reading—or in Andrew’s case, being read to! Andrew is really excited about trucks and dinosaurs, “always asking everyone what their favorite dinosaur is,” says Dan.
