Happy Valentine’s Day
It’s the season of love, and who better to share it with than your children? There are plenty of children’ books that are perfect for Valentine’s Day. Many can be found at your local library or bookstore. You may consider: Guess How Much I Love You, by Sam McBratney – Counting Kisses, by Karen Katz – My Love For You, by Susan Roth – Love You Forever, by Robert Munsch – Daddy Kisses, by Anne Guttman – Mommy Loves her Baby, by Tara Jaye Morrow or – The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn. Enjoy your kisses! TopWrap Up Winter with These Fun Activities
The holiday season is long gone and the summer seems light-years away but winter is at its peak. Now is a great time to try new activities and have some winter fun with the whole family. If you’ll be playing outside in cold weather, it’s important to dress children in layers. Several thin layers will keep them dry and warm; usually one more layer of clothing than an adult would wear should do the trick. Though you might not want to end the fun, children shouldn’t stay outside for long periods of time—continue the fun inside with hot chocolate for a warm and healthy treat! If it’s too cold or rainy to play outside, you can certainly make a winter wonderland indoors for playtime. Grab some blankets and a book or release some energy playing freeze and melt – a winter version of freeze dance! Let your kids wiggle around and dance while “melting,” and have them freeze in place when you say “freeze.” There’s nothing like getting little hands into cold goop! Making play dough is always fun, and can be a good substitute for playing outside in the sand or snow. Here’s a quick and easy recipe: Play Dough Recipe: Have your child mix the flour and salt in a bowl. Then add water. Knead and squeeze the dough until it has a clay-like consistency. You may need to add more water to reach the consistency desired. Add food coloring to make different colors. (Green “goop,” or “slime” is always a favorite.) Use plastic (not metal) cookie cutters to get their imaginations running wild. Safety Tip: When children are playing in the kitchen, create an area free of knives, breakable and sharp objects, coffee pots, and other hot appliances. Don’t have much time? Let them play restaurant by helping you make dinner. With some help and suggestions from you, they can plan out a meal and design menus and placemats. Safety Tip: Keep children away from stovetops and install oven locks and stove knob covers. Be mindful of choking hazards in the refrigerator and consider installing a refrigerator lock. We hope these suggestions get you started with your own ideas for family fun this winter. Don’t forget that for many families winter is also full of unwanted germs and sniffles. Janeen Duffy Dolores Petersen Holly Watson Spotlight on Claire! This month, we chatted with Safety 1st Industrial Engineering Manager, Brandon Allen, about the newest addition to his family, Claire Ryan Allen. Claire is 6 months old and is already a star on our Safety 1st Bulletin Board! She has two siblings: Ben 8, and Ashley 7 who she just adores. She also has two Great Danes, but doesn’t seem to care for them very much (Brandon thinks they feel the same about her!) Claire was given her middle name, Ryan, after her young Uncle Lance Corporal Josh Ryan Bleill, a Marine who recently served in the war in Iraq. I’m sure she will be very proud of her middle name as she gets older and learns all about Josh’s distinguished service to our country. Brandon is proud to report that Claire’s first words were “Da Da” (don’t worry Mrs. Allen, we’ll keep letting him think that) and she’s been babbling up a storm! Luckily she sleeps from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. without any problems so the whole family is very happy about that! Claire has already traveled to Disney World in Florida and will be vacationing in Hilton Head later this year. She’s growing like a weed and has been off the height and weight chart at every doctor’s appointment so far. Maybe the WNBA is in her future? Claire travels around in many of our products – some of her favorites are our Quinny® Buzz™ stroller and our Maxi-Cosi® Mico™ infant car seat. One thing that Brandon and his wife, Julie, will be working on is childproofing their home so that as Claire begins to crawl, she won’t get into any potentially dangerous things in their home! Brandon knows we’ve got him covered on that end with all of our fantastic Safety 1st childproofing products. Congrats to the Allen family on their newest bundle of joy!
