Happy Mother’s Day
First and foremost we’d like to wish all moms a Happy Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day is a time to commemorate and celebrate our mothers for all the great things they’ve given us. Many people honor their mothers by making a special breakfast, giving cards and flowers, or maybe a day at the spa. This year why not spend some time doing fun activities with your little ones? You could paint a flower pot together and then plant your favorite flower, or decorate your own card with your child’s hand prints. However you may celebrate Mother’s Day, we’re confident it will be a day to always remember.
April Showers Bring May Flowers
We’re not sure how the weather is in your neck of the woods, but in New England it’s been raining buckets! We’re glad May has finally arrived and now’s the time to start rejuvenating your flower beds. Gardening is a healthy alternative to watching TV or playing video games, and provides a perfect time for bonding with your child while enjoying all that Mother Nature has to offer. To get growing, why not try planting a fun flower like snapdragons, or a low maintenance flower like mums – both grow easily in full sunlight and last all summer long. For young children let them do easy activities like watering the flowers – you can buy cute children’s gardening sets at many retailers, which helps give them a sense of ownership over the garden. Let older children deadhead the flowers – they love pulling the dead flowers off and throwing them into a pile, or send them on a hunt to weed out all the rocks. They can collect the rocks and then later paint them to make pet rocks (or decorative paperweights). Whatever you decide to plant, we’re sure you’ll enjoy spending time in the fresh spring air.
Remember, safety comes first!
- Keep chemicals like fertilizer and plant food away from children
- Keep sharp gardening tools like hoes and hedge trimmers out of your child’s reach
- Make sure your little one is wearing long sleeve shirts and pants to help avoid prickly weeds
- Always make sure you and your child are covered in 30 SPF sunscreen

Spotlight on Megan and Riley!
This month we chatted with Safety 1st Director of Business Systems and Strategic Partnerships, Eric Jandorf, about what it’s like raising his two daughters, Megan 2 ½, and Riley, 3 months. As you can probably imagine Eric’s hands were already full with one little lady, but now he has two! (He’s cautioned us that he’s already busy preparing his self defense tactics for when they’re teenagers.) Megan loves to sing Disney® Princess songs and can even sing the Aladdin and Pocahontas ones from memory (we think that’s very impressive for her age!) She eats everything, but her favorite foods are watermelon, cantaloupe, broccoli, and carrots. And sometimes when she’s really good Dad might sneak her a couple M&M’s® for dessert. She’s very active and loves to run up and down their stairs, scaring Mom by jumping off the bottom step every time. Eric is hoping that once they put in their new swing set this weekend, Megan can put her energy to use outside! Riley, the newest edition to the Jandorf family, is cooing and has been demonstrating her vocal ability since she came home from the hospital. She can already reach and grab at things and her facial expressions show that she recognizes who’s talking to her. She has beautiful bright blue eyes and loves to smile. Eric’s biggest challenge with Riley right now is getting her on a set schedule. They’re working on that right now and look forward to the day when Riley can sleep through the night so Mom and Dad can be well rested for work! We wish the Jandorf family much luck with their two little ladies!
