Preventing SIDS
One of the most tragic events that could ever happen to a parent is the death of a child. Unfortunately this happens to approximately 2,500 babies every year in the U.S. due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The good news is that since 1993, the rate of SIDS has declined by 50%.
At this time there is no known way to prevent SIDS, but here are some steps you can take to reduce the risk of sudden infant death:
- Place your baby to sleep on his back.
- Place your baby in a crib with a firm mattress. Only your baby should be inside the crib, remove all pillows, crib bumpers, bedding, toys, stuffed animals, etc.
- Do not smoke while you are pregnant and don’t let anyone smoke around your baby after he is born.
- Do not dress your baby too warmly for sleep; keep the nursery room temperature between 68° - 72°F.
- Breastfeed your baby whenever possible. Doing so decreases the occurrence of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections.
- Have anyone who comes in contact with your baby first wash their hands to prevent the exchange of respiratory infections and germs.
- Educate relatives, babysitters and other caregivers about these important safety tips.

Spotlight on Ellorie!
This month we chatted with Safety 1st Senior Graphic Designer, Mike Corcoran, about what it’s like raising his 2 year old daughter Ellorie. First and foremost, Ellorie is a huge fan of the Muppets™. She knows all the characters and loves to sing along with the movie. Ellorie is very independent and her daycare provider can’t believe how well spoken she is at her age. She can state her full name, and is an avid reader – making mom and dad read her four bedtime stories a night! She loves “Arts and Crafts Sundays” where she gets to decorate a new letter of the alphabet every week for the refrigerator. She also likes taking trips to the zoo and can proudly state all of the animals names. Her next outing is to Newport, Rhode Island for the Newport Irish Festival where she’ll get all decked out with shamrocks and beads for the big parade. And with spring right around the corner mom and dad can’t wait to start planting their flowers, herbs, and vegetables – all of which Ellorie loves to help pick! We wish Mike and his family a happy St. Patrick’s Day full of fun!
